Blessed Sacrament Church, Heavitree Catholic Church
With planning beginning in 1931, Heavitree's Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church was opened in 1932 by the Bishop John Barrett.
The building is constructed from red brick with stone dressing in a Romanesque style, with the main entrance consisting of six green marble columns, which welcomes the weekly congregation.
The bell tower stood originally at the grand height of ninety feet prior to 1942 when it was hit by a bomb strike, which had demolished the presbytery that was situated next to tower. The tower was not restored to its former height, but instead was kept at sixty feet. Within the tower there is a four-ton bell, which is currently the third heaviest bell in the South West of England.
The church also holds an organ, that dates back to the creation of the building, which is held within the church's gallery.
The church has strong links with St. Nicholas Catholic Primary School, which is located just a few miles away, as well as St. Peter's Church of England High School. Alongside the church, the local convent of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary also work with the children who attend St. Nicholas's School.
The church runs a range of groups including a Thursday Lunch Club, a Toddler Group, men's breakfast, and a meditation group.
