The present church was extensively rebuilt in the first half of the 19th century and signifies the practice of worship at the 'top of the hill,' for a whole millennium. Heavitree Team Ministry is extensive and extremely active welcoming new and young parishioners as well as supporting numerous groups, projects and organisations.
Additionally incorporating the churches of St. Paul and St. Mary Steps, encompassed within are the Conventional District of Trinity, St. Lawrence and St. Clare – a proprietary chapel (formerly privately owned).
Worship and prayer services are held throughout the year and in addition to the 7 sacraments, which include Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation and Matrimony, funeral services are a parishioner entitlement though the churchyard is unavailable for interment – Exeter has two municipal cemeteries for this purpose. (We will advise you with regard to regulations, availability and other local cemetery and churchyard factors.)
Supporting local schools is just one aspect of the ministry within the Diocese of Exeter and St. Michael's Church of England Primary School, fulfilled an upgraded status to 'Academy' in 2013. Since 1871, the school has enjoyed an excellent reputation lead by an enviable mission statement, "To provide outstanding education for the children in our community by following Christian values of compassion and service; to use leadership strength to ensure that the children and young people in our schools receive the best possible educational; whilst the adults employed to serve them, are valued and challenged to be the best they can."
The team ministry admirably addresses all types of worship in the parish from traditional to modern, formal to informal; not only in its gospel preaching but also in comfortable and convivial surroundings. They also cater for disabled people and their wheelchairs, where applicable.
The church has a dedicated group of volunteers who care for the building's structure and grounds with a focus on the historic and physical preservation for future generations. The team also holds a wide selection of events throughout the year to raise funds for St. Michael and All Angels – these include quiz nights, concerts and dances.
